Jay Juliano is a founding member of Parsons, Lee & Juliano. He received his undergraduate education from The University of Alabama at Birmingham (B.A. 1974) and his law degree from The University of Alabama School of Law (J.D. 1977). At The University of Alabama School of Law he was Alabama Editor of The Alabama Law Review (1976-77), a member of the Bench and Bar Legal Honor Society, Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society, and Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity.
Jay is rated AV Preeminent@ by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethical standards. In 1985 he was inducted into the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) which requires its inductees to have tried at least 50 jury trials as lead counsel. He was president of ABOTA’s Alabama Chapter in 2005. He has been listed among Alabama=s top attorneys by SuperLawyers for the past 12 consecutive years.
For years, Jay has been named to Best Lawyers in America in the practice specialties of medical malpractice – defense, product liability – defense, and personal injury – defense. Best Lawyers in America is based on a rigorous peer-review survey comprising more than 7.4 million confidential evaluations by top attorneys. Additionally, he has been named Best Lawyers in America’s Lawyer of the Year for 2020 in the Birmingham area in the practice specialties of medical malpractice – defense and personal injury – defense.
He is a former president of the Birmingham Bar Association, Young Lawyers Section, and has served on the Executive and Grievance committees of the Birmingham Bar Association. He is currently a member of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association and Defense Research Institute.
During a career which spans 44 years, Jay has tried many cases on behalf of hospitals, physicians, product manufacturers and the construction and insurance industries throughout the state of Alabama. He has successfully defended clients in construction and contract matters through the arbitration process. While his main specialty has been civil litigation, through his representation of medical caregivers and institutions and corporate clients, his career has been studded with appellate cases resulting in major legal precedents ranging from the adoption of the Alabama Trade Secret Doctrine to numerous other landmark decisions by the Alabama Supreme Court dealing with medical malpractice, general litigation, civil procedure and intellectual law.
In keeping with the philosophy of Parsons, Lee & Juliano, Jay is committed not only to representing his clients in litigation and pending legal matters, but also to educating clients in the areas of risk management, claim prevention and quality assurance.
His practice in medical malpractice defense has expanded to include a sub-specialty in regulatory and administrative law including before the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners, Alabama Board of Nursing, Alabama Board of Pharmacy and the Alabama Board of Dental Examiners.
Jay is a frequent speaker on legal and medical issues to attorneys, medical administrators, physicians, medical residents, nurses, those in positions of risk management and the insurance industry. He has served on the Cumberland School of Law Continuing Education Advisory Board, and in that capacity assisted Cumberland School of Law in organizing and presenting numerous legal seminars for over 15 years. He is past chairman of the Medical/Legal Liaison Committee of the Birmingham Bar Association, which worked closely with the Jefferson County Medical Association on medical/legal issues. Jay was named Birmingham Lawyer of the Year in 1992.
Jay is the proud husband of Marietta, his beautiful wife of 47 years. They have two terrific children, Paul, who is also Jay’s law partner, and Carrie, who fortunately is the spitting image of her mother. They are also the proud grandparents of four beautiful grandchildren, Paul Michael Jr., Karoline, Luke and Baby Lena Marietta.
